5 Ideas to Stop Stress Eating During a Pandemic

I’m three weeks into being at home full-time.

My kids are finishing school online, my man is working remotely at the dining room table, and I’m… I’m doing what feels good to me.

Although I’m currently laid off, I’m actually kind of appreciating this time off.

As an introvert, and someone who doesn’t really miss her 9-to-5, I’m experiencing this time as a gift.

Part of this gift is that I now have time to finish my assignments and complete my coaching certificate at Concordia.

Another part of it is having time to spend with my immediate family, connect with extended family, work out, walk outside, do yoga, and meditate every day.

As an introvert, this is pretty great.

Although I do miss seeing friends and family, and can’t wait to hug people when I finally can, a big part of me is embracing this time.

Life has slowed down, it feels more peaceful, less hectic.

But I admit, despite this, a little fear and anxiety creep in from time to time.

Do you choose to snooze?

I’m not generally a morning snoozer these days.

But in the past I’ve stayed in bed after my alarm, awake, internally protesting against getting up to go to work.

“Just a few more minutes,” I’d silently negotiate with myself.

And then it would frustrate me to be rushing around to leave the house.

I remember this being especially true when the kids were younger and I would have to push them through their morning routine.

I dreaded those mornings.

They usually ended in raised voices, defiance, and on occasion, melt downs (mine more than theirs.)

This may be a little uncomfortable…

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog post exploring our belief that aging is inevitable.

The post was inspired by a podcast I was listening to.

And that led me to read the book that inspired the podcast.

Dr. David Sinclair was the interviewee of that podcast, and the author of the book, “Lifespan: Why We Age—and Why We Don’t Have To.”

This book is powerful, and full of the latest cutting-edge science in the field of aging.

Shortly after finishing the book, and by beautiful coincidence, I found out the guy – Dr. David Sinclair – was coming to McGill as a guest speaker at their annual science symposium!

Do you have to age?

If you had have asked me this question last week, I’d have said “Of course!”

Aging is just a natural part of life, it’s like a law or something unchangeable, everyone has to age.

And in fact, I’m ok with that.

I don’t really want to live forever.

But I do want to live healthy as long as possible.

I want a long health span, not just a long life span.

And the newest research in aging is showing how we can have both.

Feeling more impatient lately?

Waiting line at the grocery store, I was thinking:

“This basket is heavy, I just want to put this down… Doesn’t she see me standing here with all this stuff?  Why doesn’t she move her things forward so I can put my basket down.  Oh look!  The cash next to me is opening… I’ll just go over… Oh no, he just took my spot!  Can’t he see that I’m carrying this heavy basket?  What’s wrong with him??”

Nope, not proud to admit that this stuff was going through my head.

I’m a yoga teach after all, I should be more zen than this…  Right?

And yet this impatience and frustration with other people shows up in my head, seemingly more often these days.

Is it just because I’m getting older?

Do you have Summer Belly?

Summer is definitely here, and if you’re living in the east of Canada, like me, it’s a beautiful one so far.

Of course, with summer comes more skin.

And maybe you’re noticing your belly isn’t as bikini-ready as you wanted it.

Is it your changing hormones?

Ya, maybe.

If you’re getting close to, or are smack-dab in the middle of menopause, then this is possible.

In that case, you may have some extra belly protruding around, or just below, your belly button.

But there may be another explanation.

Could your belly bloating woes be seasonal?

Why I eat chips almost every day

Around 4:30 every day – when I get home before dinner – I have a salt craving.

And my salt of choice is chips.

Any type of chip will do, but I particularly like Miss Vickie’s Lime and Black Pepper.

I know it’s not a healthy habit.

But it’s a habit I allow, and now I’ve learned to allow it without guilt.

So why did I decide to do this?

Well, there are 4 criteria that I’ve got to meet, and as long as I do, I’m good.

And you can apply this criteria to whatever you food you want…

How to vegetize your favorite meals

Here’s a post I created a couple of years ago, which I decided to share again.

With so many of you changing your meat-eating habits, I thought this post would be helpful.

Happy cooking!

Being the only vegetarian member of a meat-loving family has its challenges.

But despite that, there are just so many advantages of a vegetarian diet – including making me feel lean and clean – that I’m still going strong after 7 years.

Yay!

Now maybe you, on your road to being more aware of your health, have decided to go more plant-based but aren’t sure where to begin.

I want to share with you some easy ideas that can turn traditional meals into veggie dishes with just a few key ingredients that I always keep on hand.

The top 6 ingredients I recommend are:

Making lunch plain and simple

What are you eating for lunch these days?

If you work outside your home full time, brown bagging your lunch can be super beneficial in many more ways than one.

The key to a successful brown-bagged lunch is to keep it plain and simple.

Because you don’t want to spend a tonne time and effort planning and preparing it.

And so I’m a big cheerleader for eating the same lunch every day.

Yup.

The same lunch, every day.
