What are the most important things in life to you?
Chances are, if you’re like most of us, “My health” is somewhere near the top of the list.
But I’m not sure if many of us actually believe ourselves when we say it.
In fact, I hear that a lot.
I hear the guilt around not making health a priority.
And the shame around being out of shape and overweight.
What I’ve learned is that we all want our health to be a top priority.
But we don’t always know how to make that happen within our busy lives.
And that’s ok.
Because there’s a solution.
The Big Rock Theory
I don’t know if you know the book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” by Steven R. Covey.
It was a popular book back in the nineties, and that’s when I first read it.
Then, about twelve years ago, while working in corporate, I had the opportunity to take the course based on the book.
And the one big thing that always stuck with me all these years is his Big Rock theory.
He defines the Big Rocks in your life as being all the most important things.
Things like work, family, health, me time, and so on.
And Gravel (the much smaller rocks) is defined as all the small tasks, busy work, and time wasters.
Things like answering texts and emails, scrolling on social media, doing laundry, cleaning the house, and so on.
Now, if you imagine your life as an empty bucket, and you fill it with Gravel first, you’ll find there’s no space to fit all the important things i.e. the Big Rocks.
But…
If you place all the Big Rocks in the bucket first, you’ll find you can then fit the Gravel in the empty spaces in between.
So, the big idea I’ve taken from this is…
If Health is one of your Big Rocks, then put it in your bucket first.
What does that Big Rock of Health look like in your life?
It shows up in your calendar.
Bottom line… If Health is one of your BIg Rocks, it needs to be planned.
Because, as you may have realized, activities around your health don’t usually just happen.
They take conscious effort.
So, put them in your calendar.
Make them as important as a meeting with your boss or a doctor’s appointment.
The biggest issue I usually see, is that we try to fit the Big Rock of Health into our life bucket after placing everything else.
And then there’s no room.
So, it’s doesn’t happen.
But if it’s planned first, there’s a much greater chance of success.
Here are some of those Big Rock activities you can include in your plan:
- Workouts or fitness classes
- Walks or runs
- Meal planning
- Meal prep
- Grocery shopping
- Rest or meditation
- Passion projects
- Break times
- Meal times
- Bedtime
- Wake up time
- …
When PLAN is a four letter word
I know a lot of us resist planning.
It sounds long, boring, and where do you even begin, anyways?
But I know, after working with dozens of clients, it HAS to happen.
No matter what your health goals.
You need to know what the activities are, when they’ll take place, and for how long.
And that’s where I want to help.
I’ve created something to help you out.
To make planning easy, and even FUN.
It’s called the PLAN 2B FIT Workshop.
And it’s happening on Wednesday, May 25th at 7pm EDT.
I love the idea of a workshop because it’s inter-active.
So I can share my ideas with you, but you can also share your ideas.
It’s the power of many.
AND the goal of the workshop is that you leave with your plan.
A plan that you can implement right away.
Please share this Workshop with someone who could use it.
Let’s do this, together!
Debbie
